Applying at Macy's

Macy's is now hiring for its new department store at Fresno's River Park shopping center, but the hiring process left some job seekers confused. The Macy's furniture store at Shaw and Cedar is now dubbed the Macy's River Park employment center because this is where prospective employees will be interviewed. More than 250-positions are open. Some applicants rushed to get here thinking they'd be interviewed early.

With resumes in hand, nearly a dozen people lined up in front of Macy's furniture store. Josh Kennedy was the first in line at 5 AM. Kennedy said, "I did the same thing at Winco. You have to be here early in the morning, just so you can be guaranteed a spot to be interviewed."

Some people left disappointed because Wednesday was just the first day to apply. Eventually, 128 people will be hired for River Park's new anchor store- Macy's. It will occupy the old Gottschalks which was liquidated earlier this year. A sign instructs applicants to apply on-line at Macysjobs.com. We searched the website and found job postings in Fresno ranging from loss prevention manager to retail sales. A company spokesperson said a miscommunication led people to believe interviews would be immediate. Nelson said, "Once they've applied online, their applications are matched for what jobs openings we have. If it looks like we have a good match, we call the candidate for an interview."

We spotted construction crews busy at River Park with opening day around the corner. Macy's is also hiring 128- positions for their store in Visalia. 18-year-old Daniel Rivas submitted his application knowing he faces tough competition. Rivas said, "It worries me that I don't have a lot of experience. I have some experience, but not necessarily in retail. With all the competition out there, there are so many people with experience like older people with years and years of experience that are just looking for a job."

You can still apply for a job if you don't have access to the internet. Macy's has computers inside all their stores for people to apply. Managers hope to have all 256 positions filled by the end of September. The stores are scheduled to open October 28.
