Placer County Fire

August 30, 2009 11:50:51 PM PDT
Erratic winds whipped a small spot fire into this huge devastating hurricane of a wildfire that tore through north auburn, destroying people's homes and businesses.Firefighters don't have an official count, but estimate about 60 homes were burned. Regional firefighters called the state for back up after about an hour and half of trying to put it out themselves. As teams of firefighters worked the flames, other crews ran from house to house, rushing people to safety.

The winds drove this fire, moving it along quickly, and making it very unpredictable.

Residents walked around in complete shock that this really did happen to their neighborhood. Yet some of them knew deep down this was a real possibility.

"We've always worried about that field behind us, trim it or nothing"

By 7:00pm firefighters said they had good control of the fire.

At about the same time, the reality started sinking in for the people who live here. Many of them slowly surveyed the damage, and had a hard time believing their eyes.
