9/11 Anniversary Events Around the Valley

Fresno, CA City of Fresno:

The City of Fresno will commemorate September 11th with a "Day of Service and Remembrance" event at Eaton Plaza on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Mayor Ashley Swearengin will issue a proclamation recognizing local volunteers who give generously of their time to meet a variety of critical needs across our community. A moment of silence will also be observed in honor of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Mayor Swearengin will present the proclamation to Cathy Caples, Executive Director of HandsOn Central California and Pete Weber, Chairman of Fresno Citizen Corps. Volunteers from all local organizations are invited to attend the commemoration event and be recognized. Fresno City Council member Blong Xiong, Fresno Fire Chief Randy Bruegman and Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer will also participate.

Following the ceremony, attendees are encouraged to stay for the evening's "Movies in the Park" program, sponsored by Fresno PARCS and Comcast. The festivities will include a display of vehicles, featuring a new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) rapid response unit, the Police Chaplain's NEST vehicle, Fresno Fire's "Emergency Support 1" bus, and more. Food will be available for purchase along with a bounce house for children. The animated Disney movie "Bolt" will begin at dusk. The movie and parking are free.

Clovis Fire Department Pays Tribute to 9/11 Victims:

On Friday September 11, 2009, the Clovis Fire Department will commemorate the losses suffered by our nation on September 11, 2001. At 6:59 a.m., Clovis Fire Dispatch will sound tones (five sets of five) over Channel 1. This set of tones is rooted in communications history as the signal to lower flags to half-staff honoring a comrade who had fallen in the line of duty. At 7:00 a.m. one minute of silence will be observed immediately followed by reading the names of all 343 New York firefighters who bravely gave their lives that day.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the Clovis Fire Department Honor Guard will also participate in the annual Pelco ceremony, along with other public safety departments from the area. Located at 3500 Pelco Way, this annual event and the 9/11 museum serve as a focal point for the community to honor and remember all who tragically perished six years ago. Members of the media and the public are welcome to attend.
