Fresno Homeless Man Arrested on Arson Charges

September 24, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Police have arrested a homeless young man for starting a dumpster fire that spread to a Northwest Fresno business. But it's what he claimed about the crime that raised eyebrows.Around 2 a.m. Thursday morning, firefighters were called to a fire at the "Ventura Tv Wholesale Appliance Depot" on Blackstone across from Lithia Motors. Two dumpsters and a mattress had been set on fire behind the store.

The fire got inside the building, burning some merchandise. Firefighters quickly put out the flames. They said damage inside the store was limited because sprinklers controlled the fire.

Officers spotted an 18-year-old man leaving the scene. Police said he told officers he was paid to start the fires.
