Thousands of U.C. Employees Protest

September 24, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Hundreds of U.C. employees plan to walk off the job Thursday at noon to protest the school system's handling of its financial problems. The fall semester has already started at U.C. Merced, but Thursday will be the first day of classes at most other U.C. campuses.

More than 1,100 employees, including some at U.C. Merced, will stage a walkout today to protest tuition hikes, enrollment cuts, furloughs, and increased class sizes.

The U.C. system faces a possible $535-million dollar state funding cut.
