Merced Man Shoots Himself during Police Chase on HWY 99

C.H.P. officers said a Merced man died after he shot himself in the head while being chased by police. Investigators said 24-year-old Yeng Veng had his estranged wife and two young children in the car at the time.

Police said it began at a Central Fresno apartment complex on 8th near Olive Ave. Witnesses said he had a gun and police said Veng had threatened violence in the past.

Police issued an Amber Alert and tracked his car through a cell phone signal. The C.H.P. started chasing him just north of Oildale when officers said he shot himself, lost control of his car and hit a big rig.

He was taken to kern medical center where he died.

The woman and children had minor injuries.
