The "Daily Beast", a news and opinion website, has given Fresno an IQ score of three points, saying the city had deficiencies all across the board.
Deductions were made for lack of college education, book purchases, and voter engagement. Las Vegas ranked just above Fresno, and rounding out the bottom five are San Antonio, Louisville, and Memphis.
Raleigh-Durham, north Carolina, was ranked the smartest city in the country, with an IQ score of 170.
Fresno mayor Ashley Swearengin released a statement regarding the low ranking.
She said: "This is a flawed study that uses indicators that don't accurately measure the intelligence and capability of the people in our city. Nevertheless, Fresno must always stay focused on improving the community's educational attainment. It's the single biggest determinant of any city's success. The city of Fresno is committed to working with our educational partners to make sure that happens."
