The Susan G. Komen Central Valley Race for the Cure® and Fresno State Athletic Department are issuing the final call for Valley residents to join the 11th annual run/walk event on Saturday, October 24th and support breast cancer. Organizers expect more than 7,000 participants to come to Fresno State to join in this year's race and survivorship celebration. The Fresno State Athletic Department has been named 2009 Honorary Race Chair in recognition of their continued support of breast cancer awareness and education through programs such as their annual Pink Zone women's basketball game and Volleyball Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Sue Behme, head coach for Fresno State's women's lacrosse team, is representing the department and has been inspired by two aunts to actively promote breast cancer awareness. One aunt successfully battled breast cancer and another has been instrumental in the continued growth and success of a cancer support services program in Washington State. "The more I can advocate and help promote the importance of breast cancer awareness and breast health, the better. Early detection is key," said Coach Behme.

Seventy-five percent of the funds raised by Komen's Central Valley Affiliate stay in Fresno County to support local breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs. In addition to raising funds to fight breast cancer, the Komen Central Valley Race for the Cure® promotes awareness, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.

The Komen Central Valley Race for the Cure features a USA Track & Field (USATF) 5k certified course and will include a men's and women's timed 5K run, a co-ed 5K and 1-mile walk and a Kids for the Cure® event. The men's 5K run begins at 7:30 a.m. and the women's at 8:00 a.m., then the co-ed walk at 11 a.m. in front of the Satellite Student Union off of Barstow and Maple avenues. The Survivor Recognition Ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m.
