Visalia Police Crack Down on Drunk Drivers

FRESNO, Calif. The Visalia Police Department, California Highway Patrol and other south valley police agencies have banded together to perform dozens of drunk driving details and check points this and next year.

The agencies received a nearly $400,000 grant to catch DUI offenders. Last year 22 people were killed in Tulare County from drunk-driving-related accidents.

"This program is working in Tulare County, arrests are up and fatal traffic collisions relating to DUI are down," said Officer Brian Winter.

"It allows for more officers to be out on the streets. Drunk driving is an absolutely senseless crime. It's avoidable," said Visalia Police Chief Colleen Mestas.

Since they received the grant in 2007-- the DUI task force says it has taken more than ten thousand drunk drivers off South Valley streets.
