Keeping Fresno Streets Safe

As people ring in the New Year, more than 70 Fresno Police officers are patrolling the area in an effort to crack down on drunk drivers.

"The reason we're probably more concerned about it is the weather is great, it's a full moon, it's not foggy, it's also in front of a three day weekend. Everything's right for a big weekend."

Compared to 2008, injury DUI crashes are down 26 percent in 2009 and non-injury DUI crashes are down by more than 15 percent.

"You have your driver's license with you?"

DUI checkpoints in Fresno are helping the cause.

"Well, I think it's good because they're saving people's life or whatever but I think it's nice for them to do this."

And for those who are drinking, there are more options in terms of getting home safe. After getting a DUI several years ago, Wes Burguess and his friend started We-Be-Sober two months ago.

For thirty dollars, someone will pick you and your car up and drive you back home. Burguess said business is booming this New Year's; a benefit to him and the drunk drivers he's keeping off the road.

"It just shows that they're more aware of what's going on and how bad of a deal it is not just with a DUI, but the worst case scenario is where someone can get hurt and even killed."

We-Be-Sober is booked up until 2am.

Fresno Police have made about 3100 DUI arrests in all of 2009. They said that's about average. Officers are all over the city, but one big concern is Downtown Fresno. Bars there don't have to close until 4:00 a.m., which is the first time for those extended hours.
