Las Vegas Shootout at Federal Building

Las Vegas, Nev. Las Vegas, 8:00 a.m. a man armed with a shotgun walks into the lobby of the Las Vegas federal building. Within the hour, a video that purportedly captured the sounds of the gunfire was posted on YouTube. What it doesn't show is that inside ... two federal officers were hit by the gunman: a 65- year old court officer who is fatally wounded ... and a Deputy U.S. Marshal who is injured ... the gunman dies outside the building after being shot by U.S. Marshals.

The shooting happened as the federal building on famous Las Vegas boulevard was re-opening from the holiday weekend. Local TV stations warned residents that a three block perimeter had been locked down around the federal building which houses federal courts, agencies, and the offices of Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign.

Sen. John Ensign (R) Nevada said, "Security is there for a reason and it worked, unfortunately, those peple are there on the front lines."

Federal Police evacuated the building and searched it floor by floor coming to the conclusion the gunman acted alone. What they don't know is the motive for the bizarre attack. That is something investigators will try to determine as federal officers begin to make arrangements to bury one of their own.
