Foggy Day Schedules Help Keep Kids Safe

FRESNO, Calif. Central Unified is on Plan-B today, which means a three-hour delay to the start of the day. This is the second day in a row. School officials don't take any chances when it comes to kids' safety.

The issue for districts like Central is that a lot of their buses pick up kids on country roads so they are standing out in the dark and in the fog so it becomes a safety issue. School officials try to minimize the effect fog delays may have on the time children spend in the classroom. Students can make up work they miss and many schools try to keep the school day as normal as possible.

For example at central if buses are delayed two hours, classes start two hours late, but are shorter. School still opens on time to accommodate students who aren't bused.

Some administrators at rural schools say they plan for the fog by adding more instructional time earlier in the school year.

The fog season has not been so severe this year: the most foggy day schedules came on December 17th with 39 schools. By comparison, this time two years ago there were nearly 80 foggy delays in one day.
