Abandoned Valley Dogs Head to Canada

FRESNO, Calif. Take a look inside the animal shelters of the Valley and you will see their small faces. They are the unwanted or abandoned of Central California's too short love affair with small breed dogs. There are too many being born, too few with permanent homes and too many not being adopted says Beth Caffrey of the Central California SPCA, "You run out of room in a shelter and they have to go somewhere."

But on this Friday morning Executive Air at the FYI was buzzing with volunteers and SPCA staff carrying small dogs and their crates. Thanks to a partnership between the Cntral California SPCA, its Foster Dog volunteers and a Canadian rescue organization more than a hundred 'little' dogs will find homes in Canada.

Janet Bailey is a Foster Dog Care volunteer, "Somebody deserves to have a great little guy like this." Janet took in one of the puppies while it grew big enough to be adopted after being neutered. Caffrey says the Foster Dog Care givers teach the pups manners and more to prepare for their new lives, "These foster families have opened their homes, their hearts. They take care of them and keep them socialized." Early that Friday morning they all spiffed up their warmly dressed adoptee pups and then waited for their air lift plane to arrive. Janet Bailey says, "I'm really sad to see him go but I'm really excited that he's gonna have a great home and he's a good dog."

When 'The Orange Dog' founder Janet Folk stepped off her private gulfstream jet she explained to Action News that her actions boil down to one simple reason, "I just realized how many little lives ... were uh ... were destroyed and I just have to do it. I mean look at their little faces. How could you not save them ... ?"

The pups picked to go to Canada are the fortunate ones who get a home. But animal shelters house so many others who may not be so lucky. In the small dog adoption area at the SPCA I was reminded that while those puppies are winging their way to Canada there are plenty of puppies and dogs waiting to be adopted right here all over the Central Valley. Perhaps you'll find one of them.
