A banner hanging just inside the huge facility at the Riverview Shopping Center advertises a new gym opening March 2010. The name -- Fort Washington Fitness -- the owners are a mystery -- but according to a message on the answering machine -- the gym will open this week.
/*Gold's Gym*/ collapsed late last fall and was resurrected by locally owned Sierra Sport and Racquet Club. On February 1st members showed up to find a handwritten note telling them the gym had closed.
George Brown's Sports Club has added one thousand new members at its three gyms in Fresno and Clovis in the last month. George Brown looked into taking over Gold's but decided not to.
It's unknown if the owners of the new Fort Washington Fitness will honor former memberships -- or hire back previous employees. Those questions and many others should be answered when the new gym opens Friday.
