Funeral plans for Officer Bejar

FRESNO, Calif.

His funeral will take place on Monday.

Javier Bejar knew the dangers of serving, first his country and then his community. But when he unexpectedly passed away Monday, making funeral plans was made easier by the fact his wife knew exactly what Bejar wanted.

"Him and his wife had discussed this day, the day that this might happen, a lot and so she was not struggling for any decisions because he had already made them. So when the questions were asked, she had the answers," Reedley Police Chief Steve Wright said.

Still, coping with the tragedy has been difficult. Bejar's wife has been in seclusion with family members since her husband was taken off life support Monday.

Bejar was an organ donor and in death, gave a new chance at life for at least one other former law enforcement officer awaiting a transplant.

On Monday, the Fresno County Sheriff's office is extending a hand. Sheriff Margaret Mims is lending her staff to cover for Reedley Police so that every member of their agency can attend the services.

"To the citizens of Reedley. the calls will be answered. Dispatchers will be there. There will be deputies and officers answering calls for service and in this particular case, it's the least we can do," Chief Margaret Mims said.

Reedley has a small police department. Chief Steve Wright says after Bejar is laid to rest, the department will cling to each other and do what their fallen colleague would've expected of them.

"The way we will honor him is getting back to work and doing our duty to the community and that's exactly what he would have wanted us all to do."

Reedley Police are planning to honor Bejar this weekend. A candlelight vigil will be held Saturday night at 7 o'clock at the Reedley High School track.

The public is invited to attend. Officer Bejar's memorial service is planned for Monday morning at the Fresno Convention Center new Exhibit Hall.

Several downtown Fresno streets will shut down before and after the funeral Monday morning.

"M" street will be closed between Tulare and Ventura from about 6 a.m. to noon.

Kern Street will be closed between "L" and "M".

Inyo will be closed between "L" and "P" streets.

And Capitol Street will be closed between "N" and "P".

Immediately after the funeral, hundreds of vehicles are expected to take part in the funeral procession from downtown Fresno to the Reedley cemetery.

The procession will begin on "M" street, then head south onto freeway 41 and then highway 99.

It will then travel east on Manning Ave, then south on Reed.
