New Americans urged to fill out Census

FRESNO, Calif. Fresno City Council member Blong Xiong and local Asian and Pacific Islander leaders launched a new campaign Saturday, in front of the Fresno center for new Americans in southeast Fresno.

Xiong says participation in the census is very important to the valley.

"It impacts everything from money that comes in to the city that has to do with roads, education, employment, and many in our API community are challenged with language issue and we want to make sure that we provide the resources so they complete the questionnaire," Fresno City Councilmember Blong Xiong said.

Asian and pacific islanders are one of the fastest growing communities in the United States.

In 1990, the U.S. Census Bureau counted more than 6 million API's in the country, and that number increased by more than 3 million people in 2000.

The census shapes voting districts and determines state and local funding.

Help with the census form is available at the Fresno Center for New Americans.
