Health care reform

FRESNO, Calif.

Opponents say that if the bill passes, our entire economy is at stake.

But supporters fear without the bill, healthcare in this country will deteriorate. "We have a moral imperative to have health care coverage for all Americans."

Dr. Harry Harris runs a home health agency based in the Central Valley.

He slams critics of the health care bill, and says if it passes; it will have the biggest impact on health care since the 1960's.

"I was in Washington when Medicare passed in 1965. I heard these arguments. It's going to be the end of our American healthcare system and this is the best thing that has happened to this country."

Harris stands behind Congressmen Jim Costa and Dennis Cardoza, who on Saturday announced they will both vote yes on the nearly trillion dollar initiative.

The lawmakers' decision comes after allegations that their yes vote was traded for more water allocation to the Central Valley, something Cardoza strongly denies.

"It's not only a despicable lie, but it is absurd."

In a statement to Action News, Costa said in part quote "I was not willing to make a final decision on my vote until I saw the actual language in the bill to protect patients from losing their insurance coverage, from having their rates jacked through the ceiling, and from being denied coverage by insurance companies."

Still, opponents in the valley remain defiant.

A tea party event became heated Saturday, with nearly 200 people denouncing lawmakers who plan on voting yes for the bill.

The group later marched down to Congressman Costa's Downtown Fresno office, claiming he and others do not represent the will of the people.

"Its going to bankrupt companies here in the central valley and all over the nation and it will probably result in people literally not getting the medical attention they need because bureaucrats are telling them they're not allowed to get it."

No word yet on what time Sunday's vote will likely happen.

Again, the house needs 216 votes to pass the health care bill.
