La Sierra Military Academy in Visalia May Close

VISALIA, California The meeting is for parents to decide on the two options the Tulare County Office of Education is giving them -- either eliminate the junior high school all together or phase it out starting this fall.

Angie Brown says she's seen her daughter make a complete turnaround in school ... after enrolling her at La Sierra Military Academy, a public charter school that's part of the Tulare County Office of Education.

Roxanna Slover said, "They're really supportive of what you do and they give you the right direction and they don't just let you give up."

Roxanna is now one of the highest achieving middle schoolers at the academy.

Right now La Sierra serves 7th through 12th graders but due to budget cuts the Office of Education may have to shut down the junior high program.

Principal Rene Moncada said, "We've been cut twice by the state in ADA and that is the primary source of revenue for our junior high program.

Moncada says the Tulare County Office of Education is letting parents decide on either shutting down the junior high program entirely -- or letting this year's seventh graders finish 8th grade next year before shutting the school down. Brown and her daughter hope the school does the latter.

Moncada hopes whatever decision is made is in the best interest of the students.

"It's very trying for most educators and most families when they're taking a look at how they're going to take care of the needs of the quality education needs of their children," said Moncada.

What parents discuss Thursday night could ultimately decide the future plans for the junior high school.
