Energy Star label sting

FRESNO, Calif. The labels are supposed to be a sign you'll save money. But a sting operation shows that might not be the case.

The government accountability office or GAO recently set up four fake companies to submit Energy Star applications.

Fifteen bogus products were able to win the Energy Star seal including a gasoline powered alarm clock and an air purifier that actually turned out to be a space heater.

Now the GAO is calling for reform.

"The American public has a right to know what the program is and isn't at this point. And right now for many of the products, it's a self-certification process," Greg Kutz said.

In addition to the sting, LG and Kenmore were recently caught selling refrigerators with the Energy Star label that didn't meet requirements.

The government says it will now start testing products before awarding the coveted Energy Star seal.
