Fresno Double Murder Trial Delayed, Only Witness Arrested

FRESNO, Calif.

The prosecution rested its case Monday after using phone records to try and put Woodley in the area of his father's house when Roy and Angie Woodley were murdered.

The defense is only planning to call one witness, the daughter of the so-called "mystery man" in the case, Dallas Mossey. But Michelle Williams was arrested Sunday and couldn't take the stand Monday.

When the prosecution rested its case in Woodley's trial Monday, the defense had nowhere to go.

Attorney Eric Green wanted to call just one witness to connect Mossey to the deaths of Roy and Angie Woodley in 2005.

The mystery man Mossey first came up when his DNA appeared under Roy Woodley's fingernail at his autopsy.

The coroner admits it could've been a case of cross-contamination since Mossey was autopsied right before the murder victim.

But Mossey's daughter told investigators she recognized some of the names in Woodley's murder case, like admitted meth dealer Jeff Rancour.

Michelle Williams didn't testify Monday, though. She was arrested Sunday and attorneys say she was too strung out on drugs herself.

Prosecutors say phone records show no connection between Mossey and Rancour, but they do show some significant usage by Phillip Woodley.

His cell phone was usually used in Selma, but on the last night anyone saw his father and stepmother, it was used in Fresno, closer to their home. The next morning, it was off.

"The device associated with Phillip Woodley and so forth would have either placed or received a call in the early morning hours," said wireless expert Jim Cook after analyzing Woodley's phone usage.

Phillip Woodley is not testifying in his own defense, but he spoke today for the first time during the entire trial, when asked if he wanted to be a part of discussions on instructions for the jury.

"We talked about it your Honor and I'm satisfied with whatever Mr. Green decides," he told judge Gary Hoff.

Phillip's family also hasn't spoken publicly since the trial started, but his daughters sent Action News a statement and one of them posted this message on our Facebook page.

"This is very sad and it's torn our family apart," Sharon Woodley wrote. "But I love you dad and this is almost over with."

Williams is scheduled to take the stand Tuesday morning.

The attorneys expect to make closing arguments Thursday and then it'll be up to the jury to decide the case.
