Investigators say /*Dwight O'Neil*/ had about nine grams of rock cocaine, four ounces of marijuana, and $2,713.00 in cash. But even though he's facing felony charges, he was released from the Fresno County Jail because of overcrowding after just six hours.
O'Neil spent four years on the basketball court for Fresno State, but now he's headed for criminal court.
After watching a Central Fresno home for a few weeks, police determined the former point guard had been dishing out drugs.
When they went in to serve a search warrant, they saw one more suspicious sight.
"Our officers could see through the window that O'Neil was at the kitchen table counting money," said Fresno Police Capt. Dennis Bridges.
O'Neil is the 41st highest scorer in Bulldog history and led a young team last season before getting his degree in Africana studies. But his status as a sports star didn't help with police investigators, who apparently had no idea who he was.
"You guys knew all along this guy's a former Fresno State basketball player?" an Action News reporter asked Capt. Bridges.
"Not that I know of," he replied. "I didn't have any knowledge of it and as far as I know, the officers didn't."
O'Neil also ran into trouble while at school.
Coach Steve Cleveland suspended him for six games last season after he spent time in jail for driving with a suspended license.
The coach issued a short statement Tuesday saying, "I'm saddened and disappointed to learn Dwight has allegedly been involved in such a serious matter. He is a graduate of Fresno State and we wish him well as he works through this challenge in his life."
Action News reporter Corin Hoggard talked to O'Neil Tuesday afternoon. O'Neil was upset because he thought police were exaggerating what happened and they messed up his house.
O'Neil also said he wants to say more, but he needs to talk to an attorney first.
