Abdon is a commercial truck driver and says last week, officers demanded proof he is a U.S. citizen while he was stopped at a weigh station. Abdon says he showed them his drivers license and provided a social security number, but that apparently wasn't good enough.
Abdon was eventually released after his wife provided officials with his Fresno County birth certificate.
"I don't think it's correct I have to take my birth certificate with me all the time," said Abdon.
"I can't even imagine what he felt being put in a vehicle and people watching like he was a criminal," said Abdon's wife Jackie.
An immigrations official says it is not unusual to ask someone for their birth certificate. They also said Abdon being detained had nothing to do with Arizona's new immigration law.
