Alleged 'Poodle Bandit' Captured in Ripon

FRESNO, Calif.

Investigators had dubbed this robber the "Poodle Bandit" because of the bushy wig he used in each robbery.

That includes the Citi Bank on April 14th in Northwest Fresno. Police say the man in a disguise pointed a gun at the teller and demanded cash before he ran away.

A similar robbery took place Thursday night in Modesto. An alert witness saw the robber leave the bank and called 9-1-1.

That led to a chase down Highway 99 that ended in Ripon. Police had to use the "pit" maneuver to stop the vehicle.

The suspect was then arrested. They found a gray wig in his car and that's just one of the reasons Modesto Police believe he's the "Poodle Bandit."

Sgt. Rick Armendariz with the Modesto Police Department said, "Based on the similarities and of how he committed these robberies and obviously the physical description. We're contacting other jurisdictions who have had bank robberies committed by the suspect and we're comparing photos and surveillance videos."

The man under arrest has been identified as 52-year-old Belko Yovanavich. He is being questioned at this hour but has not been booked.
