One man is dead after being hit by a train in Northwest Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. Police say the man was walking in the middle of the tracks wearing headphones. The conductor of the train sounded his horn, but the victim apparently didn't hear. He was struck and killed on the tracks.

"We don't know when the trains are coming. The best thing is to stay off the tracks, on the sidewalks. If you see someone on the tracks, call 911," said Bill Richards with the Fresno Police Department.

The train was stopped for a short-time in Madera County while police investigated.

The victim's age and name have not been released.

This accident comes just one day after an elderly woman was killed crossing the railroad tracks in Merced.

The sheriff's department identified the victim today as 84-year old Eustaquia Alejandro. She was hit by a train Sunday morning at the crossing on "O" Street near 16th Street.

Investigators say the rail road alerts were working properly and the conductor honked several times, but they say Alejandro went around the arms.

This is the second death on this railroad track and the third in a year in Merced.
