"They're awesome!"
You might think chicken nuggets are nutritious, with claims like "whole grain," "100% all natural," and "organic." but consumer reports' Urvashi Rangan says don't be fooled.
"We evaluated 14 brands of nuggets, along with McDonald's Chicken Nuggets. Almost all of them were not very nutritious," Rangan said.
Including those Tyson chicken nuggets touted in the ad.
"Yes, the ingredients are all natural, but the Tyson nuggets were among the highest in fat and calories, just about matching McDonald's," Rangan said.
And most of the nuggets are loaded with sodium, including the two soy-based ones, Boca Original Meatless Chik'n Nuggets and Morningstar Farms Chik'n Nuggets.
"One brand of nuggets did score a very good for nutrition, Health is Wealth. But it didn't do very well for taste," Rangan said.
And you have to pay attention to serving size. It's usually four to six nuggets.
"Older kids and adults can eat a lot more, which means they'll be getting a lot more sodium and fat than what's listed on the nutrition panel," Rangan said.
So while your child may thank you for the nuggets, serving them with a salad and some fruit on the side will make for a more nutritionally balanced meal.
