Fresno Police say the victim was in his early to mid 20's and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he later died.

Officers say the shooting was gang related. Chief Jerry Dyer says it's the first gang related homicide since their gang suppression task force went into effect about a month ago.

Around 5:30 Wednesday night neighbors in Old Fig Garden heard a string of gunshots ring out.

Barbara Harmony said, "There was this popping. You know I was hoping it was firecrackers but it was like boom, boom, boom! Boom, boom, boom ... and then it was over."

The victim collapsed on the sidewalk near a canal. And a neighbor tells Action News they saw paramedics trying to give the victim CPR.

"I saw them trying to resuscitate someone and they eventually put him in the gurney in the ambulance and took him away," said Harmony.

Shootings are almost unheard of in this historic part of town. Christmas Tree Lane happens each winter, just a couple blocks from here.

Lt. Gregg Sanders said, "This is unusual to be happening in this part of Fresno."

"We do hear gunshots quite often west of Palm Avenue quite a bit. But right in this area ... very ... I mean it's the first time we've ever heard of it," said Stan Faretta.

If you have any information you're urged to contact the Fresno Police Department.
