Police later arrested two men in the area, and they say one had been carrying a loaded sawed-off shotgun.
The second robbery happened at the Bi-Rite liquor store near 11th street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
Officers who responded heard a gunshot nearby and then found the suspect, 19-year old, Israel Kenneth Juarez.
They say he had accidentally shot himself in the leg. He's been booked into the Merced county jail.
