Police step up festival security after fatal beating

FRESNO, Calif. Security officers checked every single vehicle entering the Regional Sports Complex at Jensen and West.

The increased police presence was noticeable at the water festival.

Families appreciated the stepped-up patrols. Pa Thao of Fresno admitted, "I was kind of hesitant to bring my children here but all in all, things like that happen. It's the few that ruin it for everyone."

Police say a young man was beaten to death on Saturday after two groups fought in a parking area. His identity has not been made public.

Organizers say it was important for the community not to cancel the event.

Pao Fang, Executive Director of the Lao Family Community, said, "We assured them the police would be increasing, the security's increasing and the police department they made sure that we're all here safe and they want us all to be happy."

During the water festival sports teams from around the U.S. compete for prize money.

Organized sports have grown considerably in the Southeast Asian community.

Ai Yang called it, "A lot of fun. A lot of good games and a lot of heat too."

Kids found squirt guns to be the perfect way to cool off.

But the heat may have contributed to an on-the-field scuffle police had to help break up. Officers wanted to make sure tempers were kept in check.
