In May, CSU Trustees adopted a new policy allowing them to raise fees at any time -- soon they will meet to discuss raising tuition before the beginning of the fall semester.
Fresno State's campus is busy with freshmen and transfer students ready to begin college in the fall. With possible fee increases on the horizon returning students say shelling out more cash is wearing thin.
Student, Adam Dariyanani said, "You see those jeans with hole in them? I feel like that's my education. I'm paying more for less."
California State Trustees are considering a 5% fee increase for undergraduate students and a 10% increase for doctorate students.
Student, Jenny Brooks said, "That's tough ... my parents do support me so I'm sure that will be tough on them."
Under the proposal fees would go up to:
Undergraduates: $204.00 - $4,230.00
Teaching Credential: $234.00 - $4,908.00
Graduate Students: $252.00 - $5,214.00
If the proposal passes it would be one of several recent increases.
Student, Katlin Kaundart said, "Coming in as a freshman I paid the original amount then had to come back and pay an additional $300.00."
Because of the budget crisis trustees increased fees by 32 percent last year. If this proposal is adopted fees will have increased 53 percent in three years and 196 percent since 2002.
While students are paying more money, more than 4,000 classes throughout the CSU system have been cut this fall.
Student, Adam Dariyanani said, "I'm getting less classes which means I'm probably going to take 5 years to graduate when i could have done it in 3 and a half."
Some parents say the cost of an education is priceless.
Lorna McDivitt said, "We may scrimp in some areas, but it will be well worth it for her to get her education."
The special trustee meeting is set for next Friday in Long Beach.
