It happened in Gustine about a half mile south of highway 140. Investigators say a 38-year-old man was fishing in the canal when he lost his pole in the water.
They say he stepped in to try to get it, but lost his footing and fell into the very fast moving water. Other fishermen in the area say they saw the man travel about 150 feet downstream before going underwater.
Saturday night, divers searched five to six miles of the canal starting with the area where he was last seen.
