Fresno soccer fans gather to watch World Cup

Fresno, CA

The quest for a global title was an exciting one, though giving fans throughout the country and here in Fresno a reason to cheer.

This crowd of soccer fans was the biggest one yet for Samba in northwest Fresno. Fans showed their support for both the U.S.A. and soccer.

"If we win this game, it's definitely going to take soccer to another level in the U.S. We really have to win today," Robert Lopez said.

"The World Cup only comes around every four years. So it's fun, the whole drama of it," Eric VonBerg said.

And in true world cup fashion, the game included plenty of drama, beginning with a Ghana goal, celebrated by the very few.

"I want Ghana to win, because it's the only African team left in the competition. I want Ghana to win because of that."

Of course, the majority wanted a victory for team U.S.A.

They got their goal in the second half. After two hours of play, including extra time, the U.S. was unable to answer Ghana's second goal. And this time there was no late game heroics for the American team.

"We were looking for a miracle on ice. But this is miracle on Grass. We just didn't get it," Jay Ghazal said.

This is the second time in a row the Americans were eliminated from the World Cup by Ghana.

The team also beat team U.S.A. in group play in 2006.
