Fresno man's career cut short by tragedy

FRESNO, Calif.

Police say the couple had been separated for more than a year. And Robert Acuna went to his wife's apartment -- hoping to reconcile their marriage, when something went wrong.

Action News has learned more about the bright young career that was cut short by this tragedy.

Those that know the 20-year-old best say the sky was the limit on his dancing career. They were shocked to hear the news of his death -- but the owner of a local dance studio is making sure no one will forget him.

At just nine years old you can see that Steven Acuna had no problems being in the spotlight. He danced and trained at Jazzy D's Dance Studio in Northwest Fresno for five years. Longtime choreographer and friend Ken Gee says Steven left six years ago to pursue bigger and better things. "He went to all the dance auditions and did like Gepetto and danced with Fiona Apple and Radio City Rockettes, toured with them. Carl's Jr. Commercials."

Steven most recently worked with his mother Gloria at the Goldberg Law Firm. Gloria worked as a paralegal at the Downtown Fresno firm for 16 years. Jazzy D's owner Debbie Marchini says dancing was still number one in Steven's heart. Over the years they always kept in touch and Marchini says she was thinking of bringing Steven in to teach classes. Now instead, she and members of her dance studio are mourning his loss. "The parents, the kids that come in and said I remember Stevie. Stevie this can't be true. You know it's just amazing today."

Both Gee and Marchini say Robert and Gloria were terrific parents. In their time with Jazzy D's they saw nothing close to any domestic issues between the Acuna's. Which makes this murder-suicide even harder to comprehend. "Very very good parents. You saw the love they had from them and everything. They supported him 100-percent."

Posters have been put up with pictures remembering the talented young man many know as "Stevie." Friends and even strangers took the time to sign their thoughts into words for a man they will never forget.

The couple leaves behind two adult children -- one which also danced at the studio with Steven. The Goldberg Law Firm says they will be taking care of the funeral arrangements. A date hasn't been set.
