Merced family hopes low riders help solve murder

FRESNO, Calif.

28-year old Jorge Chavez was shot while parking his car on June 13th.

The banged up 83 Buick Regal did not look like much when compared to the other low riders at the Merced Custom Auto show but what it lacks in performance Victor Figueroa hopes it makes up in purpose.

He's trying to solve his brother's murder.

"We brought it out here to see if anybody had any information that might lead to conviction or an arrest," Figueroa said.

Figueroa said someone somewhere knows who gunned down 28-year-old Jorge Chavez last month outside his home.

"It got shot here, on the lower panel. Through the tire. This was the actual hole where it was shot through," he said. One bullet struck Chavez inside the car.

Police just released this car a few days ago. The family wanted people here at the car show to see exactly what it looked look the night it was shot up and where Jorge Chavez was killed.

Merced resident Liz Alcorta said: "The community needs to be involved and this is a positive way to say, 'Hey a crime has been done, loss of life, family destroyed and we need to get the word out.'"

More than 300 cars were entered into Saturday's event and brought a following. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

The show's president said with all the traffic maybe someone can help solve this case.

"We're asking if anybody knows anything or has any information to turn it in because again this is a father. This is a brother. This is a friend," said Cimmaron Ruiz with the Merced Custom Auto Show.

While Merced police continue their investigation they praise the efforts of Chavez's family passing out flyers, raising a ten-thousand dollar reward and reminding people that a killer is still out there.
