Officers went to the Olivewood Apartments on Olivewood Drive near R Street Saturday night after someone reported a bad smell coming from one of the units.
That's when they found the body of a 63-year-old woman, who had been dead for a few days.
Investigators also discovered the patio door of her apartment was unlocked, which neighbors said was unusual.
The woman's death was listed as suspicious, and the crime scene response team was called in to collect evidence.
An autopsy will now be performed to determine how the woman died.
