A worker found the body before 10 a.m. Friday on a property near Highway 140 and Thornton Road just outside Merced city limits.
The sheriff's office dive team removed the body from the pond, and detectives are now trying to determine how the woman died.
An autopsy will be performed next week, but until then, the case is being investigated as a homicide.
