HEAT team busts chop operation in Fresno County

FRESNO, Calif.

Fresno County sheriff's deputies went out on a call to the 9100 block of West Mckinley near Westlawn Monday afternoon.

When they realized it was a chop shop operation they called in the CHP. Deputies noticed a couple of cars that had been partially or completely dismantled.

They also found numerous parts of cars including gas tanks and tires. Two of the cars were identified as being stolen recently from the city of Fresno.

"One or two individuals can make a huge difference in the auto theft rate, these people don't just go out and steal one car and turn over a new leaf the next day. They steal car after car after car especially once they get good at it and they know how to do it," Sgt. Leonard Sherman said.

The HEAT team, which stands for 'help eliminate auto theft' is made up of several valley law enforcement agencies.

They work together several days a month to cut down on the huge number of auto thefts.
