Valley parolee told to leave Lassen County

FRESNO, Calif.

A Lassen County Judge has granted a petition seeking to remove convicted killer Loren Herzog from the county, saying the state Corrections Department did not follow its own rules regarding parole release procedure.

In 2001, Herzog was convicted in the murders of three people in San Joaquin County. He was to be paroled this past summer in San Joaquin County or Tehama County -- but corrections officials backed off on placing him in San Joaquin County after protests from the victim's family and the community.

He was paroled to a trailer on grounds just outside the high desert state prison in Susanville in mid-September.

The county says the Department of Corrections failed to notify the County Sheriff or Susanville Police Chief and District Attorney 45 days in advance of Herzog's parole. Lassen County authorities say they were told just two days before his release.

The court ordered him removed from Lassen County. It's not known where Herzog might go next or whether a higher court will intercede.
