They say they were on their way to arrest Vincent Hernandez, when he ran out of a home holding a gun and that's when an officer opened fire.
Earlier in the day, police say the 31-year-old tried to stab someone at a disturbance in the area of Fresno and Olive.
Hernandez is a confirmed Bulldog gang member and faces several charges including attempted stabbing and possession of drugs.
The officer says he shot at Hernandez out of fear for his safety. He was not hit.
