Porterville officers investigated after incident with fellow officer

FRESNO, Calif.

Porterville's city manager tells Action News that witnesses spotted an off-duty officer slumped over in his personal vehicle in a turn signal lane around noon on Thanksgiving Day.

They called 9-1-1 and finally woke up the off-duty officer after banging on his window repeatedly. An on-duty Porterville Police Officer responded to the incident, and with the approval of his sergeant, drove him home instead of conducting a sobriety test.

City officials say the off-duty officer later admitted to having several drinks an hour before the incident. Employees at a nearby store say the incident shocked them.

The two officers who decided to drive the off-duty officer home are under investigation for failing to properly report the incident.

Their names haven't been released. City leaders didn't find out about the incident until they were contacted by a Porterville Recorder reporter.
