Cockfighting bust in Hanford

FRESNO, Calif.

It happened at a home just outside of Hanford on Seventh Ave. near Lacey Blvd. The roosters were fighting in the back of this yellow house behind me.

A neighbor called deputies to complain. When they arrived more than a dozen people ran in different directions.

Police arrested 13 people, including three juveniles. Deputies found 104 roosters, two of them were already dead. The others had to be euthanized.

They also discovered gambling tables as well as a number of claws and other items that are used to coach the roosters and entice them to fight viciously.

"They were betting on roosters that were fighting. Some would fight til they were injured and couldn't fight any longer. Some would fight until they were dead," Kings County Sheriff's Office Lydia Montoya said.

The men arrested are facing a number of charges, including fighting roosters and running from authorities. As for where this happened, deputies still haven't tracked down the homeowner.

They say the suspects are not cooperating. We did speak to someone off camera who lives next door.

That person says no one has lived in the home for a long time. This investigation is still ongoing.
