Edison High recaptures a coveted crown

FRESNO, Calif.

The students returned to the top spot in Fresno County this past weekend by defeating University High School, the team that broke Edison's 13 year winning streak.

The clinking sound of winning medals around the necks of Edison High's Academic Decathlon team means something very special this year. They say the victory compares to another big game played last weekend.

Harsan Sidhu said, "It was like a Super Bowl for us. Football teams they run their plays practice every day, we do the same thing just on an intellectual level."

This year Edison brought the gold back to the southwest Fresno campus. University High won the Fresno County Academic Decathlon last year ending Edison's 13 year winning streak. Students say this time around they were motivated by the stiff competition.

"Without University we wouldn't have done as well because University is always there, gave us our fire this year." Sidhu said.

This year's theme is the great depression, and with seven subjects to master, studying and practicing sometimes until 9:00 at night -- Edison students say this wasn't an easy win.

Navjit Gill said, "The first thing everybody sees the schedule, they say no way you gotta be nuts. There is just something about Academic Decathlon."

The hard work doesn't stop now, in six weeks Edison has to be ready for the state Academic Decathlon. This group of seniors and one junior is currently spending more time with teammates than with their families.

"We've been practicing so hard together, and we've been really living together for several months, we're really like a little family." Ian Whiting said.

Through hard work and competition, they've forged a bond that will last for years to come.
