Punctured fuel tank halts Amtrak in Bakersfield

FRESNO, Calif.

Bakersfield station KGET-TV reports, several hundred passengers left downtown Bakersfield around 6 p.m. Monday night but three hours later they ended up back in Bakersfield.

Amtrak says shortly after leaving Bakersfield the train hit debris on the track, damaging the diesel fuel tank.

Passengers say it took 30 to 45 minutes to get everyone off the train and they walked a quarter of a mile with their luggage in hand to board another Amtrak train to Bakersfield.

The train that broke down in was connected to the new train and towed back to Bakersfield for repairs.
