Deputies file law suit against Chief Dyer

FRESNO, Calif.

Robert Nevarez and Sharon Shaffer claim Chief Jerry Dyer made inappropriate comments that created a hostile work environment.

The lawsuit alleges they were subjected to harassment, retaliation, and discrimination beginning in 2003.

And that on several occasions, the chief used offensive terms about women, African- Americans, and Asian- Americans.

Attorneys for Chief Dyer say -- after the initial claims -- the city conducted a five-month independent investigation, which found there was no hostile work environment.

The Deputy Chiefs were told to return to work after the city concluded its investigation.

Nevarez and Shaffer had been on paid administrative leave since they made these allegations in October of last year.

No monetary amount is listed in the lawsuit.
