The institute says the clean-up of the tainted water supply may cost at least 150-million dollars. The study suggests poor families are forced to pay up to $100 a month for bottled water because the wells are contaminated by nitrates from fertilizers, sewage and animal waste. The think tank says the study is the first to link extensive contamination and the financial cost for valley residents. The study says 3-quarters of the state's nitrate violations in 2007 happened in the Central Valley.
