This happened around 5:00 Wednesday evening, in an area called Hurricane Point which is up the highway from Big Sur in Monterey County. It's unclear what caused the road to give way.
Detours are in place that will take drivers far inland and dozens of miles out of their way.
Caltrans hasn't said how long the road will be closed, but based on the extent of the damage, it could be shut down for quite some time.
