Bakersfield student returns from Japan after quake

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.

Mickey Mello was one of the first Americans evacuated out of Japan. This semester, he was going to Waseda University.

He said he was in a store at the time of the massive quake, and had since been communicating with his family and friends over Skype.

"After the big quake was over, it still sort of felt like things were still moving, when they weren't. Like after you've been on a ship for like a little bit: when you get off the ship, it still feels like you're on the ship, that's the sort of feeling it was like," said Mello.

Mello had been studying in Japan since September, and was supposed to be there another 6 months. He says he wasn't ready to come home yet, but CSUB cancelled the study abroad program because of fears of radiation poisoning.
