Jerry Brown has surgery to remove cancerous growth

SACRAMENTO, Calif.

Brown's office said in a statement Saturday that he had the procedure on Friday, after tests revealed the presence of basal cell carcinoma.

It said he needed reconstructive surgery to his nose, but the procedure was done with local anesthetic. Brown is recovering at home, the statement said.

The governor was scheduled to address delegates at the state Democratic Party convention on Sunday, but the statement said he won't attend any public events until his stitches are removed.
