City offers free tire disposal

FRESNO, Calif.

Piles of tires were collected during the the City's "Waste Tire Amnesty Event" at Hoover High School Saturday.

People lined up in front of the school, taking advantage of the opportunity to get rid of tires completely free of charge.

The program is grant funded and is open to City of Fresno residents who can drop off as many as nine tires each.

"Believe it or not each year the state of California produces over 30 million waste tires that are scattered all over the cities and the counties," Esko Siipola said.

The city will now turn the tires over to a manufactuer, where they'll be shredded and turned into bark and rubber mats.

If you missed Saturday's event, you still have a chance to drop off your used tires for free.

Two more events are scheduled for next saturday at Bullard High School and Calwa Park.

Both events run from 8 a.m until 12 p.m.
