Fresno's 'Movies in the Park' big screen stolen

FRESNO, California

The city says it wasn't easy, but organizers of the 'Movies in the Park' event were able to secure a rental screen for Friday night's showings.

The massive movie screen was taken from a storage container in Fresno County sometime late this week. The city says a few other items were also taken. But the projector unit was not.

The stolen screen is about five years old. It has a viewing area of about 16 feet. The inflatable screen has been used every summer for 'Movies in the Park'. The city says that is one of the most popular events it puts on. Each Friday night, they say, about 500 people come out to watch the free movies. A smaller temporary screen has been setup.

"Unfortunately we have to sacrifice a little bit in viewing space, but we can definitely make these events happen," said Heather Heinks. "We get creative, the community comes out and supports us."

Comcast, the main sponsor, will purchase a replacement screen. A replacement screen will cost anywhere from two to six thousand dollars.

ABC30 is a sponsor for Friday night's showing.
