Valley Muslims join together to help homeless in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.

The giveaway at the Downtown Fresno Islamic Center was part of an international effort called "Humanitarian Day".

The "Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity" has put these events together in four countries and 30 U.S. States for 11 years but this was the first event held in Fresno. In addition to clothing, school supplies and medical services were also available, no questions asked.

Organizers say the event is timed to take place during Ramadan, an Islamic holy month.

"Muslims all over the world are fasting today. While we're fasting it's a great opportunity while we ourselves are abstaining from eating and drinking, we decide it's a great opportunity to provide for those who are suffering as well, or those who are struggling to eat or drink on a regular basis," Karim Hakim said.

Organizers say they plan to continue offering services to the less fortunate year round and not just on Humanitarian Day.
